From first chords to Grade 8
Here's what each stage looks like, so you know what to expect before you start.
Setting expectations
Everyone moves at their own pace. Progress depends on age, practice time and goals. Your teacher will tell you honestly how you're doing and when you're ready for the next step.

Beginner
Foundation
Hold the guitar comfortably, tune it, and play your first open chords and simple strumming. Sore fingertips in the first weeks are normal and fade as calluses form.

Up to Grade 3
Building
Faster chord changes, more strumming patterns, basic fingerpicking and full songs played from start to finish.
03
Grade 4 – 5
Developing
Barre chords, more complex rhythms and picking, and reading music or tab with confidence.
04
Grade 6 – 8 and beyond
Advanced
Advanced arrangements, your own interpretation and confident performance, alone or with other musicians.
