I live in an apartment and record music as a hobby, which means I usually record at night. This situation makes it difficult to play at loud volumes especially when you have someone like Ms Ng, my neighbour, who is a temperamental witch! I get that she lost her husband in a dreadful factory fire he had worked at back in the 70s, and she has been bitter ever since. I totally get that. But being reported every time I play louder than Volume "2" on my Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue is not cool either.
Anyways, enter the OX (btw, "Enter the OX" sounds like a really cool name for a 70s Holywood kung-fu movie)! With the OX, I can attenuate the volume of my amp to whisper quiet volumes. I'll be honest though - at these extreme low volumes, you won't get your guitar to sound as good as playing it at normal volume, but this is of no fault of the OX itself (you will naturally lose "the air" when playing at whisper quite volumes, that's just physics).
What I do to compensate is to connect my headphones to the OX. As an owner of both Iridium and HX Stomp, I have to say that the OX sounds just that extra bit more realistic through headphones compared to the other two devices. The OX app is alright. I wish it was a bit more stable and doesn't disconnect as often, but it's one of those apps where you set and forget so it doesn't bother me much. The kind of recorded guitar tones I'm getting are very good and although I'm not a professional of any sort, I am very, very satisfied with it.
In conclusion, if you need to record at night and you don't want to go down the amp modeling route, this is the next best thing. The price is a bit on the high side, but lately I've been playing more guitar after dark so that in and of itself is, in my opinion, worth it in the long run.
