Leather Guitar Straps… Let's Talk About It!

Most guitarists put serious thought into their guitar, their amp and their pedals, then grab whatever strap was cheapest at the counter. It is one of the most overlooked pieces of gear we own, despite being the one thing literally holding your instrument up for an entire gig. And of all the strap materials out there, leather is the one that has quietly earned its reputation over decades, for very good reasons.

The thing is, leather straps also carry a bit of baggage. Say "leather guitar strap" and most people picture the same plain black or tan band their uncle used in 1978. In this article we will look at why leather straps are genuinely worth it, starting with durability and comfort, and then we will tackle the elephant in the room: the idea that leather has to look old-fashioned. Spoiler, it does not, and Levy's newer collections are the proof.

Advantage 1: Durability That Outlasts Your Guitar

The number one reason players choose leather is simple: it lasts. A good leather strap is not a consumable you replace every couple of years. Treated well, it can comfortably outlive several guitars.

Where many nylon or cheap polyester straps fray, stretch out of shape or snap at the holes over time, quality leather holds its form and strength. The wide, dense material resists wear at the stress points, and the holes do not blow out as easily under the weight of a heavy instrument. For a working musician hauling gear to gigs week after week, that reliability matters. A strap failure mid-show is the kind of expensive accident you only want to risk once.

There is also the matter of ageing. Leather does not just survive use, it improves with it. Over months and years a leather strap develops a patina, softening and darkening into something that looks and feels like it belongs to you. Few materials get better the more you use them.

Advantage 2: Comfort That Gets Better With Age

Durability would mean little if the strap dug into your shoulder all night, and this is the second place leather earns its keep.

A wider leather strap spreads the weight of your guitar across more of your shoulder, which reduces the pressure and fatigue you feel during a long set. This is especially welcome if you play a heavier instrument, where a thin strap can become genuinely painful by the end of a show. Many quality leather straps, including several from Levy's, add foam padding and a suede backing. The padding cushions the load, while the suede backing grips your clothing so the guitar stays put instead of sliding around, which also helps stop the dreaded headstock nose-dive.

And like a good pair of leather boots, a leather strap breaks in. Stiff at first, it gradually moulds to the way you wear it, getting more comfortable the longer you own it. A nylon strap feels the same on day one as it does on day five hundred. A leather strap becomes yours.

So Why Do Leather Straps Always Look So… Old-Fashioned?

Here is the honest catch. For all their practical strengths, leather straps have a bit of an image problem. Because leather has been around forever, the classic options tend to be plain black, brown or tan, with a distinctly vintage, traditional vibe. Brilliant if that is your aesthetic. A little uninspiring if you are a younger player who wants the durability of leather without looking like you raided a 70s rock museum.

For a long time, that was the trade-off: comfort and longevity, or a fresh, modern look, but rarely both. That is exactly the gap Levy's set out to close with its newer collections. Series like In Bloom and Rebel Leathers keep everything good about real leather, then wrap it in designs that actually look current. Before we get into them, though, a quick question we hear all the time.

Wait, Who's Levy's? Isn't That the Jeans Brand?

Easy mistake, but no. That is Levi's, the American denim company. Levy's is something else entirely, and if you care about straps, it is a name worth knowing.

Levy's Leathers is a Canadian company founded in 1973 by Harvey Levy, and still family-run today. The origin story is a good one: when Harvey's brother Dennis was offered either cash or a set of leather-working tools as payment for a job, he chose the tools, and started crafting guitar straps while Harvey built his career in music. Five decades later, Levy's straps are still proudly handcrafted in Canada, made in facilities in Nova Scotia and Manitoba, and the brand has become one of the most respected strap makers in the world. So when you put on a Levy's, you are wearing something with real heritage and genuine craft behind it, not a fashion label's afterthought.

Levy's In Bloom Series

If you want the toughness of leather with a softer, more expressive look, the In Bloom Series is the standout.

These straps are built from 2.5-inch garment leather for a luxurious feel, then decorated with intricate botanical detailing: hand-riveted flower-petal designs and fine stitching that turn a practical strap into something genuinely beautiful. Crucially, the looks do not come at the cost of comfort. A suede backing provides a comfortable feel against your body and a grippy texture that keeps your guitar from sliding or nose-diving, and the strap adjusts easily from 48 to 55.5 inches. Handcrafted in Canada, the In Bloom Series comes in finishes ranging from a bright Daisy and Green to a soft Primrose Pink and a rich Mahogany Brown, so there is a version for floral statement-makers and subtle players alike.

This is the strap for the guitarist who wants their gear to feel personal and a little artistic, without giving up the durability that made them choose leather in the first place.

Levy's Rebel Leather Series

If In Bloom is the expressive, artistic side of leather, the Rebel Leather Series is the attitude.

Designed for players who like a bit of edge, the Rebel series is crafted from premium garment leather with foam padding and careful stitching, balancing real comfort with a tougher, more rock-and-roll look. The designs lean into that energy with features like racing stripes, bullet-style detailing and metal accents. It also comes in a useful range of widths, with 2-inch, 2.5-inch and 3-inch options, and generous length adjustment (roughly 46 to 60 inches depending on the model), so you can match the strap to both your style and your instrument's weight. Look out for finishes such as Two Tone Brown, Black Bullets and the bold Double Racing Stripe.

If your stage persona leans louder and a little dangerous, this is the leather strap that dresses the part while still treating your shoulder kindly.

Advantage 3: Look Like the Coolest Guitarist in the Room

Which brings us to the third advantage, the one nobody likes to admit matters but everyone secretly cares about: looking the part.

Your strap is one of the most visible things on stage. It sits right across your body, in every photo, every video, every set. A great strap finishes your look the same way the right pair of shoes finishes an outfit. With a series like In Bloom or Rebel Leathers, you no longer have to choose between a strap that performs and a strap that looks like you. You get leather's durability and comfort and a design that turns heads. That is the whole point of these newer Levy's collections: proof that "practical" and "cool" were never actually opposites.

Want to Look Even Cooler? Calling All Tarantino Fans

And if you really want to make a statement, there is one more Levy's piece worth your attention: the Levy's x Jodi Head Icon Series, a collaboration with renowned strap designer Jodi Head built around bold, 1970s-inspired looks.

The one to know is the Dragon Stripe colourway: a striking black stripe running down bright yellow leather. If that combination looks familiar, it should. It is the same iconic yellow-and-black that Bruce Lee wore in Game of Death, later immortalised by Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. Slinging on a Dragon Stripe is an instant nod to one of the most recognisable looks in film history. It is a handcrafted 2.5-inch leather strap, adjustable from 48 to 55.5 inches, so it backs up the cinematic flair with genuine Levy's comfort and quality. For the player who wants their rig to tell a story before they have even hit a note, this is the one.
