Every Great Record You Know Went Through One of These Nine Microphones

Every studio conversation about microphones eventually arrives at the same place. Somebody names a mic, somebody else says it is overrated, and nobody in the room can explain what the thing actually does differently. Meanwhile the vocalist is standing there waiting, and the session is burning.

The mics below are not on this list because they are expensive or because magazines say so. They are here because each one solved a specific engineering problem at a specific moment, and the sound of that solution ended up defining how records were made for decades afterwards. This article covers what each one is, why it exists, what it genuinely sounds like in concrete terms rather than adjectives, and what it is good at. Where there are variants or more affordable alternatives, we list them plainly so you can work out where your budget actually lands.

First, Why Are These Mics Pre-Order and Not Stock?

Worth being upfront about this, because it changes how you should plan.

Almost everything on this list is built in small numbers by hand. The Telefunken microphones are point-to-point wired in Connecticut. The Neumann classics are assembled in Germany. The Beyerdynamic M 160 has its two ribbons hand-fitted in Heilbronn to a tolerance measured in fractions of a millimetre. These are not products that sit in a warehouse waiting for demand.

So we bring them in on order. You tell us what you need, we confirm the model and the lead time with the distributor, and it is built and shipped for you. If you are planning a studio build or a room upgrade, factor the lead time into your schedule rather than assuming next-day availability. The Two Viennese Grails: AKG C12 and Telefunken ELA M 251

These two belong together, because they are the same capsule in different clothes, and understanding the relationship saves you a lot of confusion later.

AKG C12 (1953)

AKG introduced the C12 in Vienna in 1953, and it ran for a decade until 1963 — roughly 2,500 units in total. It was the first true multipattern microphone with remote polar control, which sounds mundane now and was remarkable then. Nine polar patterns, selected from a switch box connected to the power supply rather than from the mic itself, silently, without changing sensitivity or frequency response. An engineer could change the pattern from the control room mid-take.

Inside it sat the CK12 capsule — a dual-backplate design with two edge-terminated diaphragms in a brass ring — driven by a 6072 dual-triode tube. That capsule is the single most consequential part in this whole article, because almost everything else AKG built for the next half century descends from it.

What it sounds like: flat through the midrange with a silky, extended high end. Where a Neumann U 47 is mid-forward and assertive, the C12 is open and airy on top and slightly less thick in the lower mids. It has an unusual ability to flatter almost any source without obviously colouring it.

What it's used for: lead vocals, drum overheads, acoustic guitar, orchestral and choral work. It has been on Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley sessions; six of them were arranged in a horseshoe to capture the group vocal on "We Are the World" in 1985.

Available as: Telefunken C12 — a modern recreation with the CK12 capsule, 6072A tube and Haufe T14/1 transformer, nine remote-selectable patterns, and a self-biasing circuit that is quieter and more consistent than the original's fixed bias. Stereo sets available.

Telefunken ELA M 251 (1959)

Here is a fact that surprises most people: Telefunken never actually built microphones. It was a brand and a distributor, and it commissioned other companies to manufacture for it. When Neumann began distributing under its own name in the late 1950s, Telefunken suddenly had no flagship large-diaphragm condenser. So it went to AKG and asked for one — specifically, a multipattern tube condenser that switched patterns on the microphone body rather than from the power supply.

AKG took the C12, redesigned the amplifier, inverted the tube to shorten the distance to the capsule, put it in a new body with a colour-coded pattern selector, and the ELA M 251 was announced in 1958 and released in 1959. Same CK12 capsule. Different circuit, different dimensions, different sound.

What it sounds like: the measured difference from the C12 is a peak around 5 kHz, a narrower resonance near 12 kHz, and noticeably less bottom end, rolling off from roughly 100 Hz. In practice that combination is why it has a reputation on vocals: the 5 kHz lift puts consonants and breath forward, and the low-end roll-off means a singer can work close without the track turning muddy. Engineers often describe sources through it as sounding gently EQ'd and compressed already.

What it's used for: lead vocals above all — it is arguably the most sought-after vocal microphone ever made, and originals trade for tens of thousands of dollars. Also acoustic instruments and strings.

Variants and alternatives:

  • Telefunken ELA M 251E — the standard modern recreation. CK12 capsule with gold-sputtered diaphragm, 6072A tube, Haufe T14/1 transformer, three patterns.

  • Telefunken ELA M 251T — the same amplifier and transformer, but a CK13 capsule with an alloy diaphragm (a titanium/aluminium amalgam, more rigid and lighter than gold) and a NOS Siemens ECC801S tube. Tighter low end, more delicate top.

  • Stereo sets — both the 251E and 251T are offered as gain- and frequency-matched pairs with dual power supply and flight case.

  • Warm Audio WA-251 — a CK12-style capsule of Warm Audio's own manufacture, a JJ 12AY7 tube (a different tube type from the original) and a US-made CineMag transformer, three patterns. Around a fourteenth of the price of the Telefunken. Limited stock.

Neumann U 67 (1960): The Forgiving One

The U 67 exists because a tube ran out. Telefunken stopped producing the VF14 valve that powered the original U 47, so Neumann had to design a new microphone around a tube it could actually buy — the far more available EF86 pentode, wired as a triode.

What came out was not a compromise. The U 67 introduced the K 67 capsule, which uses two self-contained diaphragm halves on a two-piece backplate — a deliberate departure from the U 47's M7 capsule, whose shared middle electrode made matching the two sides difficult. The K 67 went on to become the most copied condenser capsule in the world.

What it sounds like, and why: here is the part most articles skip. The K 67 capsule on its own has a raw high-frequency emphasis of around 9 dB. That rise was never meant to be heard. The U 67's amplifier deliberately tames it using transformer feedback and shunt capacitors, including roughly a 4 dB reduction at 16 kHz. The audible result is a top end that is present and detailed but rolls off at the very top rather than extending flat.

Add the BV 12 output transformer, which contributes weight in the low midrange, and the EF86's even-order harmonics and progressive compression at high SPL, and you get the U 67's actual character: a slightly softer, more forgiving top end and additional weight around the lower mids, with transient peaks that get softened rather than clipped as the singer gets louder.

What it's used for: this is the microphone you reach for when a source is strident. A singer with a hard, bright voice, a loud belter, brass, anything that gets edgy on a solid-state mic. Al Schmitt named it his all-time favourite. Abbey Road's own archive documents it on Cilla Black's "Alfie," Jacqueline du Pré's cello, Stan Getz, Matt Monro and Eric Clapton.

Specs (current U 67 Set): omni, cardioid, figure-8. Max SPL 124 dB with pre-attenuation. Self-noise 17 dB-A cardioid. Sensitivity 24 mV/Pa cardioid. −10 dB pad and a switchable high-pass around 100 Hz. Ships as a set with power supply, suspension mount, cable and vintage-style case.

Alternative:

  • Neumann TLM 67 — the same K 67 capsule in a transformerless FET body running on P48, with a circuit designed to reproduce the U 67's behaviour including intentional soft saturation at high SPL. Three patterns, −10 dB pad, high-pass, 11 dB-A self-noise. Reviewers consistently note it tames strident vocals that other condensers exaggerate. Please check availability with us before planning around it — it remains listed by Neumann but has become dealer-dependent in some markets.

Neumann U 47 FET (1972): The One That Doesn't Flinch

Design work started in 1969 for the same reason the U 67 existed: no more VF14 tubes. The U 47 FET reached the market in 1972 as a solid-state microphone carrying the K 47 capsule — a centre-terminated dual-diaphragm design on a shared backplate.

Be clear about one thing, because the shared name misleads people. This is not a solid-state tube U 47. Neumann's own historical page is candid about it: "The U 47 fet never quite filled those giant footprints, but was eventually (re)discovered as a classic in its own right." Where the tube 47 is three-dimensional, the FET is flatter and more direct. That is not a fault. It is the reason it does the job it does.

What it sounds like, and why it became THE kick drum mic: three things combine. A max SPL of 137 dB, or 147 dB with the pad — extraordinary for 1972 and still enormous. A deliberately low sensitivity of 8 mV/Pa, so a violently loud source will not slam your preamp. And roughly a 2 dB presence lift between 2 and 5 kHz, which is exactly where the beater click lives. Put it inside a kick drum and proximity effect adds the body while that presence bump supplies the attack. Because the headroom is so large, the mic stays linear where a tube mic would compress — you get the unsoftened transient.

One practical detail worth knowing: it is labelled cardioid, but the K 47 behaves as a hypercardioid above roughly 500 Hz to 1 kHz, with a narrow rear lobe. It does not reject sources directly behind it the way a true cardioid does. Position accordingly.

What it's used for: kick drum, bass cabinets, upright bass, guitar amps, brass, and loud vocalists. Producers Harry Vanda and George Young chose it for Bon Scott's vocals on AC/DC's Let There Be Rock, with Vanda saying it let Bon's voice sit best with the guitars.

Specs: cardioid, P48. Max SPL 137 dB / 147 dB padded. Self-noise 18 dB-A. −10 dB pad plus a separate −6 dB output switch. High-pass shifts the roll-off point from 40 Hz to 140 Hz.

Note on naming: the 2014 reissue launched as the U 47 fet Collector's Edition and much of the retail channel still uses that name. Neumann's current product page calls it simply U 47 fet i. Same microphone.

Alternatives:

  • Telefunken U47 — cardioid and omni, VF14K tube, M7 capsule, BV8 transformer. Read this carefully: this is a tube microphone recreating the Telefunken-badged U47, not an alternative to the solid-state Neumann U 47 FET. Different circuit, different capsule construction, different job, considerably higher price. If you want the tube 47 sound, this is the route. If you want the FET's headroom on a kick drum, it is not.

  • Telefunken U48 — identical to the above except the second pattern is figure-8 instead of omni, and it wears a red logo. That is the entire difference, and it mirrors the historic distinction.

  • Warm Audio WA-47jr — a FET transformerless condenser with a K47-style capsule, three patterns, −10 dB pad (157 dB max SPL), 70 Hz high-pass. An entry-level route to the family voicing. Limited stock.

Neumann U 87 Ai (1986, from the 1967 U 87): The Industry Standard

The original U 87 arrived in 1967 as the solid-state successor to the U 67. By the mid-1970s you could walk into any session and see them everywhere — on piano, vocals, toms, overheads, guitar cabs, brass, strings.

What changed in the Ai revision, and why it matters: the 1986 update added a DC-to-DC converter. In the old U 87, the capsule was designed for 60 V polarisation but only received about 46 V straight from phantom power, costing sensitivity and noise performance. The converter steps 48 V phantom up so the capsule finally gets its full 60 V. The result is roughly a 3 to 4 dB improvement in noise floor and a substantially hotter output — sensitivity went from 8 mV/Pa to 20–28 mV/Pa depending on pattern. The 22.5 V battery compartment, a relic of an era before phantom power was standard, was deleted. A subtle acoustic side effect: the high-frequency peak moved from around 8 kHz to around 10 kHz.

What it sounds like: the honest description is about the 100 Hz to 3 kHz band — that is where the U 87 does its work, presenting that region with a richness and authority that makes voices sound detailed and commanding and drums sound punchy. Add the presence peak around 10 kHz for consonant articulation. Compared with a U 67, the top end is harder and less forgiving and there is less lower-midrange weight, because there is no tube softening transients. That is precisely why engineers still reach for a 67 on a strident singer and an 87 on a controlled one.

What it's used for: essentially everything, which is the point. Three patterns, a pad, a filter, and phantom-only operation meant one microphone could cover an entire session without a power supply. That operational versatility, as much as the tone, is why it became the default.

Specs: omni, cardioid, figure-8. Max SPL 127 dB with pad. Self-noise 12 dB-A cardioid. Sensitivity 28 mV/Pa cardioid. −10 dB pad, switchable low cut. FET circuit, transformer-balanced output.

Alternative:

  • Warm Audio WA-87jr — FET transformerless with a K87-style capsule, three patterns, −10 dB pad (135 dB max SPL), 70 Hz high-pass. A WA-87jr SE variant is fixed-cardioid without the filter. Limited stock.

Neumann TLM 103 (1997): The Honest Entry Point

When this launched in 1997 it genuinely shifted the market — real Neumann build quality and a genuine Neumann-lineage capsule at a price project studios could reach.

What it actually is: the K 103 capsule is, to be precise about it, effectively only the front half of the original K87 — a single-diaphragm assembly rather than a dual back-to-back pair. That one fact explains nearly every difference between this and a U 87. Transformerless circuit (TLM = transformatorloses Mikrofon), running directly from P48.

What it sounds like: essentially flat to about 5 kHz, then a broad presence lift of roughly 4 dB extending up to around 15 kHz, with bass tailing off gradually below about 60 Hz. Note that it is a wide plateau, not a narrow peak — it lifts an entire octave and a half of consonant and cymbal energy evenly rather than emphasising one sibilant band. The overall impression is big, open and natural, and it errs warm and full rather than thin.

The honest limitations, because you should know them before you buy:

  1. Cardioid only. No omni, no figure-8, so no Blumlein or M/S work.

  2. No pad and no low cut. With 23 mV/Pa sensitivity, a loud close source can overload your preamp long before the capsule's 138 dB limit, and proximity buildup has to be handled downstream.

  3. More susceptible to mechanical rumble and wind noise than a U 87, despite better electronics.

  4. The presence plateau cannot be switched off. On a bright source in an untreated room, that lift is baked in.

And in fairness, where it beats the U 87: self-noise of 7 dB-A against the U 87 Ai's 12 dB-A, and max SPL of 138 dB against 127 dB. It is not a worse microphone. It is a narrower one — and for a vocalist tracking in a treated booth, narrower is often all you need.

Variants:

  • TLM 103 (nickel) and TLM 103 mt (black)

  • TLM 103 Stereo Set and TLM 103 mt Stereo Set — two microphones, two EA 1 shock mounts, aluminium case. Worth noting: Neumann does not publish a matching tolerance for the pair, so treat it as a convenient two-mic package rather than a certified matched set.

  • TLM 103 Mono Set and Studio Set — different accessory bundles.

AKG C414 (1971): The Most Useful Microphone in Most Studios

The C414 is the C12's grandchild. The lineage runs C12 (1953) → C12A with a Nuvistor tube (1962) → C412 with a FET (late 1960s) → C414 in 1971, which added hypercardioid to make four patterns. Through the B-ULS and B-TLII generations it became one of the most widely owned professional condensers in the world, and in 2004 AKG formally split the line into two voices.

The current two, and the actual difference:

  • C414 XLS — carries forward the sonic character of the C414 B-ULS. Engineered for the highest linearity and a neutral sound. This is the accuracy option.

  • C414 XLII — a different capsule giving a slight presence boost above roughly 3 kHz, deliberately voiced after the C12, plus a more open, spatial reproduction. This is the up-front, forward option.

To be precise: AKG does not publish a dB figure for the XLII's presence boost, so treat "above 3 kHz, slightly airier and more open" as the accurate description rather than any specific number you may see quoted elsewhere.

What each is used for: the XLS on acoustic instruments, drum overheads, piano and ensembles — anywhere accuracy matters more than flattery. The XLII on lead vocals and, notably, distant miking — AKG specifically names classical recording and drum ambience, where that presence lift compensates for the high-frequency loss over distance.

Specs (identical across both except the capsule): nine polar patterns including four intermediate positions. Pads at −6 / −12 / −18 dB. Bass-cut filters at 160 Hz, 80 Hz and 40 Hz. Max SPL from 140 dB up to 158 dB depending on pad. Sensitivity 23 mV/Pa, self-noise 6 dB-A. Supplied with pop filter, windscreen, spider shock mount and case.

Variants:

  • C414 XLS and C414 XLII — single microphones

  • C414 XLS/ST and C414 XLII/ST — matched stereo pairs, supplied with measurement documents. AKG's own store calls these "Matched Pair"; "/ST" is the order code retailers use. Same product.

If you are building a studio from nothing and can only buy one pair of anything, a pair of C414s is usually the most defensible purchase on this entire list.

Beyerdynamic M 160 (1957): The Ribbon That Behaves

Every other ribbon microphone in this article is a figure-8 that hears the room behind it exactly as loudly as the source in front. The M 160 is not, and that single difference is why it survived.

Beyerdynamic introduced it in 1957 as a double-ribbon design — two hand-stamped pure aluminium ribbons mounted back-to-front, separated by about 0.5 mm, creased vertically as well as corrugated horizontally so they behave semi-rigidly rather than floppily. It is end-address, with the ribbon assembly rotated 90 degrees from the usual orientation. It is still hand-built in Heilbronn, Germany, and it was inducted into the NAMM TEC Awards Technology Hall of Fame in 2019.

Why the hypercardioid pattern matters: beyerdynamic markets it as the only double-ribbon microphone with a hypercardioid pattern, with rear attenuation of 25 dB at 110 and 250 degrees. That means real off-axis rejection — you can use it in a live room or in front of a drum kit without the back of the mic hoovering up everything else. Eddie Kramer chose it for exactly that reason, saying it had more rejection than anything else available at the time.

What it sounds like: 40 Hz to 18 kHz, with a smooth midrange that reviewers consistently describe as never becoming peaky or jagged even on heavily distorted guitar, and noticeably more top end than most ribbons. The dual-ribbon arrangement also gives a hotter output than a typical ribbon, so it needs less preamp gain than you might expect. Sensitivity 1.0 mV/Pa, 200 Ω, brass body, 192 g.

What it's used for: electric guitar cabinets first and foremost. Eddie Kramer used it on Jimi Hendrix's guitar and still carries one — in his own words, "the M-160, which is still my favourite mic." Also drum overheads and front-of-kit, where it adds what one reviewer called high-end smack; it is widely credited on John Bonham's kit for "When the Levee Breaks," though that account rests on secondary sources rather than a first-hand engineer's statement. Also excellent on brass and strings.

Royer R-121 (1998): The Mic That Brought Ribbons Back

Included here because no honest list of legendary microphones can leave it out, even though it is not a product we carry.

By the 1990s ribbon microphones had largely fallen out of use — fragile, dark, and prone to destruction in front of anything loud. David Royer designed the R-121 in 1997 and it launched as Royer Labs' first product in May 1998, and it changed that.

The engineering that made the difference: a patented offset ribbon transducer. Instead of sitting centred in the magnet gap, the ribbon is positioned toward the front of the mic. When a loud source drives the ribbon into large rearward excursions, it stays within the prime magnetic field instead of being pushed out of it or stretched past its elastic limit. That is the reason it survives in front of a cranked 4x12 where a vintage ribbon would not. A side effect, and arguably a feature: the front and back are voiced differently, with the rear sweeter and better suited to quieter sources.

Specs: figure-8, passive, no power required. 2.5-micron aluminium ribbon. Frequency response 30 Hz to 15 kHz ±3 dB. Max SPL greater than 160 dB at 1 kHz (and greater than 135 dB at 20 Hz — quote the frequency, because a bare "160 dB" is misleading). Sensitivity −47 dBv. 300 Ω.

What it's used for: the modern standard for electric guitar cabinets, plus brass, drum room and overheads. It arrived just as digital recording was making harsh top end a daily problem, and engineers found ribbons solved it — which is a large part of why the whole ribbon category came back. Royer Labs received a Technical Grammy in 2013 with the R-121 cited as a major factor.

Alternatives we can supply:

  • sE Electronics VR1 — passive figure-8 ribbon, 2.5-micron hand-tensioned aluminium ribbon, 20 Hz to 18 kHz, 135 dB max SPL, no power required. Uses a mechanical diffusor system rather than electronics to extend the high end. Aimed at loud sources: guitar cabs and drum overheads.

  • sE Electronics VR2 — the active version, requiring P48 and delivering roughly 14 dB more output, with sE's DYNAMITE boost circuitry built in. The one to choose if you need to cover quiet sources as well as loud ones without a noisy preamp.

Note the honest difference in role: the R-121 handles considerably more SPL than either sE, while the VR1 and VR2 are specified to a wider frequency range on paper. Please confirm current VR1 and VR2 availability with us before planning around them.

So Which One Do You Actually Need?

Some practical guidance, because nine microphones is a lot to weigh up.

If you are a vocalist buying one microphone for yourself: the question is what your voice does wrong, not what sounds best in a demo. A bright or strident voice wants a U 67 or, at a very different budget, a TLM 103 with careful room treatment. A voice that lacks presence wants a 251 or a C414 XLII. A loud, aggressive singer wants the headroom of a U 47 FET.

If you are a producer building a front end from scratch: buy versatility first. A pair of C414 XLS covers overheads, acoustic instruments, piano, room and ensemble work. Add a U 87 Ai as the do-anything centre of the locker. Grails come later.

If you run a commercial studio: your clients will ask for specific model names, and having a U 87 Ai, a U 47 FET and at least one ribbon on the list is close to a baseline expectation. A 251 or C12 is what gets a vocalist to book your room over someone else's.

If you record loud sources: U 47 FET for kick and bass cab, M 160 or a ribbon for guitar cabs. Headroom is the specification that matters, not tone.

And a general point worth making: a great microphone in an untreated room will disappoint you. If your budget is finite, the order of operations is usually room treatment, then preamp and conversion, then the microphone. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a grail mic you end up blaming.
