How to Make Your Guitar Chugs More Evil!

A high-gain amp, a low-tuned guitar and an overdrive pedal can produce a tight modern metal tone. Cut some bass before the amp, add a little midrange, keep the overdrive gain low and push the output level. It is a proven formula because it makes palm-muted notes controlled, percussive and easy to fit around fast drums.

That formula can also become too clean, too familiar and too polite. For heavier styles influenced by bands such as Knocked Loose, END and Converge, the goal is not always perfect studio precision. Sometimes the breakdown needs to sound as though the guitar cabinet is tearing open. This guide explains three ways to make your chugs more extreme: stacking fuzz into an overdriven high-gain sound, using EQ to exaggerate the right frequencies, and placing compression before distortion to make each pick attack hit the gain stage harder.

Start with a Good Chug Before You Destroy It

An evil chug still needs a solid foundation. Before adding more pedals, make sure the basic guitar tone already responds properly to your picking.

Start with:

  • The bridge pickup.
  • Fresh strings with suitable tension for your tuning.
  • Moderate rather than maximum amplifier gain.
  • Controlled bass.
  • Enough midrange for the guitar to remain audible.
  • Tight palm muting close to the bridge.
  • Consistent picking strength.

The important principle is this: create the definition first, then add destruction around it.

If the original tone is already excessively bass-heavy, fizzy or undefined, adding fuzz will usually make those problems worse. The extra pedal should create a second texture on top of the chug, not compensate for a weak core sound.

A useful basic signal chain is:

Guitar → compressor or fuzz → overdrive → high-gain amplifier or preamp

An EQ can be placed at several points depending on what you want it to control:

Guitar → EQ → fuzz/overdrive → amplifier

or:

Guitar → fuzz/overdrive → amplifier → effects-loop EQ

The first position changes how the distortion reacts. The second reshapes the sound after most of the distortion has already been created.

Method 1: Run Fuzz into an Overdriven High-Gain Sound

The usual advice for heavy rhythm guitar is to avoid fuzz because it can soften the attack and produce too much low-frequency movement. That advice is useful when the goal is a polished, tightly edited modern metal sound.

It is less useful when you want the chug to sound unstable, violent and oversized.

Running fuzz into an already overdriven amplifier or preamp creates multiple stages of clipping. The fuzz compresses and reshapes the guitar signal first. The overdrive and amplifier then distort that altered signal again. This can produce denser harmonics, an exaggerated low-mid grind and a ragged edge that a conventional overdrive boost cannot create by itself.

The basic chain is:

Guitar → fuzz → overdrive → distorted amp or preamp

You can also try:

Guitar → fuzz → distorted amp

The overdrive is optional. Keeping it in the chain can help remove some loose bass and restore attack after the fuzz.

Do Not Set the Fuzz Like a Traditional Fuzz Tone

For this application, the fuzz does not need to sound beautiful by itself. You are using it as a texture generator.

Begin with:

  • Fuzz or sustain: low to moderate
  • Output level: high enough to push the next gain stage
  • Tone: adjusted for upper-mid grind rather than maximum bass
  • Blend, if available: mostly dry or approximately 25–50% fuzz
  • Amplifier gain: slightly lower than your normal setting
  • Overdrive gain: very low
  • Overdrive output: high
  • Overdrive tone: adjusted to recover pick definition

Too much fuzz sustain can flatten the pick attack and turn individual chugs into one continuous block of noise. Lower fuzz settings often work better because the high-gain amplifier will add plenty of saturation afterward.

The output control may be more important than the fuzz control. A louder fuzz signal drives the following overdrive or preamp harder, producing additional aggression without necessarily covering the entire note in fuzz.

Use the Fuzz as a Switchable Destroy Layer

The most practical way to use this sound is to keep your normal rhythm tone available and activate the fuzz only for selected sections.

For example:

  • Verse: overdrive into high-gain amp
  • Chorus: high-gain amp with wider ambience or modulation
  • Breakdown: fuzz, overdrive and high-gain amp
  • Final impact: fuzz plus octave or gated texture

This contrast makes the fuzz sound larger. If the entire song uses the most extreme tone, the listener quickly becomes accustomed to it. Saving it for the heaviest riff gives the section a clear change in scale and texture.

Five Fuzz Pedals to Build a More Violent Chug Tone

Try:

  • Sustain: 9–10 o’clock

The Green Russian is especially suitable for slower, stomping riffs where mass and low-mid pressure matter more than clinical precision.

Use lower fuzz settings first, then adjust the bias or character controls until palm-muted notes stop cleanly without becoming too thin. This can produce a more serrated response than a conventional smooth Muff tone.

4. EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Legacy Reissue

The EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter Legacy Reissue is another strong option when you want the fuzz to become unstable rather than simply thicker. Its bias control can move the pedal from a fuller fuzz response towards gated, spluttering textures.

That behaviour works well for short breakdown accents, dissonant chords and stop-start riffs. A gated fuzz can exaggerate silence because the note decays abruptly instead of trailing into ordinary amplifier hiss and sustain.

Try:

  • Fuzz: below noon
  • Tone: adjusted slightly brighter than expected
  • Bias: lower gradually until the decay begins to tear apart
  • Level: set to hit the overdrive or amplifier firmly

Do not assume the most heavily starved setting will be the heaviest. Extreme bias settings may remove too much body. The useful point is often just before the sound completely collapses.

What About Octave Fuzz?

Treat these values as a starting point, not a universal preset. The correct curve depends on your guitar, pickup, tuning, amplifier and cabinet.

EQ After Distortion Changes the Finished Voice

An EQ in the amplifier’s effects loop sits after the preamp distortion in many conventional amplifier designs. Here, it shapes the already-distorted tone more directly.

This position is useful for:

  • Removing muddy low mids.
  • Adding a narrow midrange snarl.
  • Reducing harsh high frequencies.
  • Matching the volume of a special breakdown tone.
  • Creating a dramatic second EQ curve for selected riffs.

Try a post-distortion curve that cuts a little at 200–400Hz, boosts 800Hz–1.6kHz and gently reduces the highest available band. This can make a broad fuzz stack feel more focused without removing all of its dirt.

BOSS GE-7: Simple and Immediate

Why Attack Time Matters

The attack control determines how quickly the compressor reacts after you strike the string.

A very fast attack clamps down on the transient immediately. This can make the note smoother, but it may remove the hard front edge that makes a chug feel percussive.

A slightly slower attack allows the initial pick transient to pass before the compressor begins reducing the level. The result can be a more pronounced “hit” followed by a controlled body.

Start with:

  • Compression or sustain: low to moderate
  • Attack: medium or moderately slow
  • Blend: 40–60% compressed, where available
  • Output: slightly above unity
  • Release: fast enough to recover before the next chug
  • Amplifier gain: reduced slightly if the tone becomes noisy

The compressor’s output can also act as a boost. This is part of the effect: a stronger and more consistent signal hits the overdrive or amplifier harder.

Do Not Overcompress the Guitar

High-gain distortion already compresses the signal significantly. Adding heavy compression before it can produce:

  • Increased hiss.
  • Excessive feedback.
  • Reduced pick dynamics.
  • A flat, lifeless response.
  • Poor separation between rapid palm-muted notes.

Use less compression than you think you need. The effect should become obvious when bypassed, but it should not make every note the same volume regardless of how you play.

Xotic SP Compressor: Compact Parallel Compression

The Xotic SP Compressor offers a dry blend control, up to 15dB of boost and internal attack adjustment. The blend is useful because it allows some uncompressed pick attack to remain while compressed signal adds density underneath it.

Can You Combine Fuzz, EQ and Compression?

Yes, but adding all three requires restraint.

  • Fuzz: generates the broken, abrasive texture.

Use low compression, a moderately slow attack and a small output boost. This retains the familiar modern metal structure but makes the pick attack more consistent and forceful.

Breakdown Destroy Tone

Guitar → Muff-style fuzz → overdrive → high-gain amp

Keep the fuzz sustain low, raise its output and use the overdrive to tighten the signal before it reaches the amp. Activate the fuzz only for breakdowns or selected accents.

Broken Industrial Chug

Guitar → gated or biased fuzz → overdrive → high-gain amp → effects-loop EQ

Adjust the fuzz bias until the decay becomes abrupt and damaged. Use the post-EQ to remove low-mid congestion and emphasise an aggressive midrange frequency.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

The chugs have become too soft

Reduce the fuzz sustain, lower the amplifier gain and increase the overdrive output. You may also need more upper midrange before the amplifier.

The tone is huge alone but disappears with the band

Reduce the bass and add some 400Hz–1.6kHz midrange. A guitar sound needs midrange to remain audible beside bass guitar, kick drum and cymbals.

The rig produces too much noise

Reduce compressor sustain, fuzz level or amplifier gain. Check power supplies and cable routing. A noise gate can help between riffs, but it cannot repair a fundamentally noisy gain structure.

Fast chugs blur together

Use less low-frequency boost before distortion. Shorten the compressor release, reduce fuzz sustain and make sure the amplifier is not using more gain than necessary.

The compressor makes the picking weaker

Use a slower attack or increase the dry blend. The goal is to let part of the initial transient through, not crush it immediately.

The fuzz sounds thin and broken

The bias or gating may be set too aggressively. Move it back towards a fuller response until the chug regains enough body.

Evil Does Not Mean Uncontrolled

The heaviest guitar tone is not always the one with the most gain, bass or pedals. A truly violent chug still depends on contrast, timing and frequency control. The pick attack must remain audible, the low end must stop between notes, and the guitar must occupy a space that does not fight the bass and kick drum.

Use fuzz to create abrasion. Use EQ to decide where that abrasion lives. Use compression to control how the guitar strikes the gain stage. When each pedal has a specific job, you can create a breakdown tone that sounds larger, rougher and more dangerous without losing the riff underneath it.
