The Load Box, Explained: Why the Two-Notes Torpedo Reload II Belongs In More Malaysian Rigs

There is a specific kind of frustration that only tube amp owners understand. You bought the amp because of how it sounds when the power section is working — that bloom, that compression, that feeling of the whole circuit leaning into the note. Then you brought it home to a condo in Cheras, or a terrace house with neighbours on both sides, or a studio room with a corrugated roof, and discovered that the volume required to get there is the volume that gets you a knock on the door. So the amp sits at 2 on the dial, sounding thin and polite, and you start wondering whether you should have just bought a modeller.

There is a piece of equipment designed for exactly this problem, and most Malaysian guitarists have never used one. It is called a reactive load box. This article explains what it is, why it had to be invented, how the company that pioneered it — Two Notes Audio Engineering — got from a frustrated engineering student to a rack unit that handles your entire amp collection, and whether the current flagship, the Torpedo Reload II, makes sense for the way you actually play.

First, Who Are Two Notes?

Two Notes Audio Engineering is a French company founded by Dr. Guillaume Pille, who graduated from Montpellier University in 2005. The origin story is refreshingly unglamorous. He owned a tube amp. He could not turn it up. Nothing on the market solved the problem to his satisfaction, so he built what he needed and it turned out thousands of other players needed the same thing.

That single frustration is still the through-line of everything the company makes. Every Torpedo product is a different answer to the same question: how do you get the sound of a cranked amplifier and a properly miked cabinet, without needing the volume, the room, or the microphone?

What Guitarists Were Dealing With Before Torpedo

If you have only ever played through a head and cab, some of these will be familiar. If you have only ever played a modeller, this is the world your gear was invented to escape.

The amp only worked at one volume. A 50-watt valve head reaches its sweet spot somewhere between "unpleasant" and "illegal" in most residential Malaysian settings. Below that, you were hearing a fraction of what you paid for.

Recording meant miking, and miking meant a room. You needed a space where noise was acceptable, a decent microphone, and the technique to place it. Get the mic an inch off and the tone changes completely. Most players learned this the hard way at 2am.

Your live sound was somebody else's decision. The venue's engineer chose the mic and the position, usually in about ten seconds during a changeover. The tone you spent years building arrived at front of house filtered through whatever SM57 was lying around and wherever it happened to land.

Nothing was repeatable. Same amp, same settings, different room, different night, different sound. Studio sessions weeks apart never matched because nobody documented the mic placement.

You could not simply unplug the cab. This is the technical wall everything ran into. A valve amplifier needs a load connected to its speaker output. Run it with nothing attached and you risk damaging the output transformer. So "just take a line out and go quiet" was never an option — the amp physically needs something to push against.

Notice that none of these problems are about how the amplifier sounds. They are all about what happens after the speaker. That distinction is the entire reason the Torpedo line exists.

Torpedo VB-101: The First Digital Load Box

In 2008, Two Notes released the Torpedo VB-101, which they billed as the first digital load box. It did two jobs at once. It gave the amplifier a safe electrical load to work into, so you could disconnect the cabinet without damaging anything. Then it applied digital convolution — cabinet, microphone and room simulation — to the signal it captured.

It shipped with 16 virtual cabinets, offered a selection of modelled studio microphones, and let you position them. For the first time, a guitarist could crank a real valve amp in silence and get a usable, miked-cab sound out the other end. It was a rack unit at a professional price and it found its way into serious studios — engineers of the calibre of Michael Wagener were early adopters.

The important part is not the specification. It is the idea: keep the amplifier real, replace only the speaker and the microphone.

Torpedo VM-202 and PI-101: Same Idea, Different Rooms

Two Notes then took that concept into two other environments.

The Torpedo VM-202 (around 2010–2011) was a dual-channel rack unit built for players whose sound lived in a rack or floor preamp rather than a valve power amp. It ran on line level, so it did not need a load box, and it added something the VB-101 did not have: valve power amplifier emulation, with 6L6, EL34, EL84 and KT88 models. Being stereo and dual-mono, it could handle two independent signals at once. If you ran a preamp into a power amp into a cab, the VM-202 replaced the last two stages.

The Torpedo PI-101 brought the same technology into the computer as a plugin, with a free version, PI-FREE, alongside it. This mattered more than it sounds. It meant an engineer could record a raw, unprocessed amp signal and choose the cabinet, microphone and room afterwards, inside the DAW, without re-recording anything. That is the same logic as re-amping, applied to the speaker stage.

Between them, these three products covered the amp owner, the preamp player and the producer. What was still missing was a unit built for the person who wanted to keep using their real speaker cabinet — just quieter.

So What Was the Torpedo Reload For?

This is where the original Torpedo Reload came in, and it is genuinely a different product to everything above.

The VB-101, VM-202 and PI-101 were all about replacing the cabinet with a simulation. The Reload was about controlling the amplifier itself. It was, first and foremost, a load box and an attenuator — a volume control that sits between your amp and your speaker.

Its key specifications:

  • 150 W RMS power handling (200 W peak), for tube and solid-state amps

  • Selectable 4, 8 and 16 ohm impedance

  • RE-ACT™ reactive-active circuit, giving continuous attenuation from full volume all the way down to complete silence

  • MATCH™ input gain levelling with visual feedback, for consistent re-amping sessions

  • Balanced XLR load box output and a separate balanced XLR DI output

  • Hi-Z guitar input and a balanced replay line input/output for re-amping

  • Thermal safety sensor

Two things about that list are worth pulling out.

First, continuous attenuation. Many attenuators give you fixed steps — full, half, bedroom. The Reload gave you a sweep, so you could set the exact volume the room allowed rather than the nearest available option.

Second, and this surprises people: the Reload had no cabinet simulation onboard. It was deliberately an analog tool. Its job was to safely load and attenuate your amp and hand off a clean signal. If you wanted a miked-cab sound, you added it afterwards in software.

Who it was marketed to: studio owners, re-amping engineers, and serious players who wanted volume control and DI capability without a digital box making decisions for them. It was never the beginner's load box. It was the professional's.

What the Reload II Changes

Two Notes announced the Torpedo Reload II in December 2024, with units shipping through the first half of 2025. It is not a facelift. Almost every part of the original has been rebuilt or doubled.

The reactive load was redesigned from scratch, and now carries a Celestion® Approved Load Response. A reactive load is supposed to mimic how a real speaker's impedance changes across the frequency range, because that changing impedance is part of how your amp feels under your fingers. Having Celestion — the company that builds the speakers most guitarists are actually using — validate that behaviour is a meaningful endorsement, not a sticker.

It went from one channel to two. Twin-channel operation with independent source selection per channel means you can run an amplifier on one side and a line-level source on the other, simultaneously.

Power handling went up to 200 W RMS (250 W peak with proper ventilation), which covers high-powered heads the original could not.

The power amp section grew. Where the original's active stage was built around 150 watts, the Reload II carries a dual-mono power amplifier rated at 215 W at 4 Ω on a single channel (150 W at 4 Ω with both channels running, 120 W at 8 Ω, 50 W at 16 Ω).

It gained a stereo FX loop and dual outputs. Footswitchable, with series/parallel routing, dry/wet mix on the return, and dual-mono or A→B link modes. Two balanced XLR line outputs with independent level controls and ground lift.

It attenuates and amplifies. The continuous sweep now runs from total silence up to +20 dB of gain, which means it is not only a volume reducer — it can drive a cabinet louder than the source feeding it.

It ships with GENOME. A lifetime licence plus 24 DynIR virtual cabinets for guitar and bass, from Celestion and Two Notes.

The Reload II Feature Set, In Plain Language

Here is the whole unit, translated.

Load box: all-analog reactive load, Celestion-approved response, switchable 4 / 8 / 16 ohm, maximum 200 W RMS. Works with valve and solid-state amps. The impedance switch matters more than it looks — it means one box serves every amp you own instead of being locked to a single impedance.

Attenuation: continuous, from silence to +20 dB. Set the amp where it sounds right, then set the room volume separately.

Twin channel: two independent channels, each with its own source selection, so an amp and a line-level device can run at the same time.

Speaker I/O: one 6.35 mm amp input (max 140 V AC / 45 dBu) and two speaker outputs with adjustable levels, minimum 3.5 Ω load. Two cabinets, two different volumes.

Line I/O: dual balanced TRS line inputs (300 Ω) and dual balanced XLR outputs with ground lift and independent level controls.

FX loop: stereo / dual-mono, footswitchable, with series/parallel routing, return dry/wet mix, and dual-mono or A→B link modes.

Tone controls, per channel: Depth (+8 dB at 75 Hz) for low-end weight, Presence (+8 dB at 4 kHz) for top-end clarity, and MOJO, which Two Notes describe as delivering the feel and response of a pushed amplifier at modest volumes. Treat MOJO as a feel control rather than an EQ — it is there to put back the sense of a working power section that you lose when you turn everything down.

Build: all-metal chassis, 365 × 89 × 220 mm, 6.9 kg, real wood side panels with rack ears included in the box, universal 100–230 V power, and a three-year warranty.

Who Should Actually Own One

Be honest with yourself about which of these you are. If none of them describe you, a smaller unit will serve you better and we will say so in the showroom.

You own more than one amp. This is the single strongest case. The 4/8/16 ohm selector and 200 W handling mean one Reload II services a whole collection — a 15 W combo, a 50 W head and a 100 W monster — instead of buying a load box per amp.

You record at home in a shophouse, condo or terrace. Full valve tone into a DAW at 11pm, nobody woken up, and no microphone technique to learn.

You run a studio or rehearsal space. Re-amping, silent tracking, consistent recall across sessions, and the ability to feed two cabinets at two different levels from one control point.

You gig and you want your live sound to stop being a lottery. Balanced XLR straight to front of house, the same tone every night, while your cab still moves air on stage at whatever volume the room can take.

You play worship, functions or corporate gigs. These are the rooms where stage volume is a constant negotiation. Being able to keep the amp in its sweet spot while dropping stage level to almost nothing solves an argument you are probably already having with your sound person.

And here is the one nobody expects: you play a modeller. The Reload II accepts line-level sources, and its power amp can drive a real cabinet. So a Helix, Quad Cortex, Kemper or Axe-Fx can run into a genuine 4x12 at a controlled volume, with the modeller's cab block switched off. If you went fully digital but still miss the sensation of air moving behind you, this is the bridge back — and it works both directions.

GENOME and DynIR: The Half of the Product You Cannot See

The Reload II ships with a lifetime licence for GENOME, Two Notes' software suite — amp models, effects, and their virtual cabinet engine — plus 24 DynIR virtual cabinets for guitar and bass.

DynIR is worth understanding properly, because it is the difference between this and a folder of IR files.

A standard impulse response is a photograph. One cabinet, one microphone, one position, one room, frozen. Want a different mic? You need a different file, and you cannot adjust the one you have.

A DynIR virtual cabinet is captured with eight microphones — dynamics, condensers and ribbons — and you can move them. Roughly 10,000 positions in front and 10,000 behind each cabinet, with dual-miking, all phase-aligned. Two Notes describe a single DynIR as the equivalent of around 160,000 studio-grade IR files. There are now over 700 DynIR cabinets available across the ecosystem.

Practically: you record the raw output of your amp through the Reload II, then choose the cabinet, the microphone and its position afterwards, in software, as many times as you like. Committed to a close-mic'd dynamic and later decide the track needs a ribbon further back? Change it. No re-recording, no re-miking, no room required.

The Honest Trade-Off

One thing must be stated clearly, because it decides the purchase for a lot of people.

The Reload II has no cabinet simulation onboard. It is an analog device. If you plug it in and take the XLR out with nothing else in the chain, you get a raw, unsimulated amp signal — not a finished guitar tone. You need GENOME (or another IR loader) running on a computer, or a separate hardware cab sim, to complete the sound.

For a studio, a home recordist, or anyone already working in a DAW, that is not a limitation at all — it is more flexible, because the cab decision stays open. For a player who wants to walk into a venue, plug an XLR into the desk and be done with no laptop involved, it is a genuine problem, and the Torpedo Captor X is the more sensible product because it carries DynIR cabinets onboard.

Buy the Reload II for the load, the attenuation, the impedance flexibility and the routing. If you need a finished tone with no computer in sight, look at the Captor X first.

Where This Fits in a Malaysian Rig

The Malaysian guitar scene tends to split into two camps that do not talk to each other much. One side keeps a head and cab and accepts the volume problem as the price of admission. The other side went fully digital and stopped thinking about power amps and speakers altogether.

The load box sits in the gap, and it is a gap worth knowing about. For the first camp, it is the tool that finally lets a real amp work properly in a real Malaysian living situation — small rooms, close neighbours, and gigs where the sound engineer would very much like your stage volume to come down. For the second camp, it is how you get a physical cabinet back into a digital rig without giving up the presets and consistency you switched for.

Either way, the underlying idea is the same one Guillaume Pille had in 2005 with an amp he could not turn up. The sound was never the problem. Getting it out of the room was.
